"The Tailteann Games would probably have lain forgotten in the annals of history were it not for the ‘Gaelic Revival’ of the late nineteenth century. During this time, Irish nationalists dug deep into the past to remind the country of its rich history. They wanted Irish people to feel proud of their culture and language; restaging the Tailteann Games was seen as a means to that end. It may have seemed like a distant dream in the 1890s, but just one month after the British left Dublin Castle in 1922, the new Irish government decided to revive the Tailteann Games. This grand gesture would announce the birth of the Irish nation to the world and showcase the best of Irish culture and sport. The date was set for August 1922.

Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, J. J. Walsh, took the job of organising the event. Walsh, who had been jailed during the War of Independence, was instrumental to the success of Aonach Tailteann, as it was called. The new government allocated £10,000 for the games. Walsh gave this money to the G.A.A. to renovate Croke Park and in return, they made the stadium available for the duration of the games. Walsh also had big plans to involve Irish emigrants. Irish communities across the world held trials to choose contestants who would travel to the games.

Enthusiasm was high and plans were in progress when Civil War broke out. Aonach Tailteann was postponed. When the war ended a year later, the country was in ruins and some in government felt the money would be best spent elsewhere. Walsh, arguing that the games were more important than ever, got his way and the date was fixed for August 1924.

Anti-Treaty supporters, who had opposed the government during the Civil War, called for a boycott but their pleas fell on deaf ears. The event was a roaring success, larger than even the Olympics, held in Paris that same year. Thirty thousand people watched the opening ceremony at Croke Park as Irish wolfhounds and actors in Celtic dress paraded the arena. That night, a fireworks display lit up the skies over Dublin. An ambitious programme of events had been arranged, with six and a half thousand competitors and a thousand medals. Teams of athletes – who were either Irish or of Irish heritage – came from England, Scotland, Wales, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Canada and America.

Events were staged all over Dublin. Gaelic games were played at Croke Park, swimming took place at the Phoenix Park, rowing at Islandbridge, boxing at Portobello, billiards at the Catholic Club on O’Connell Street, chess at Trinity College and yachting at Dun Laoghaire. In fact, the range of events was staggering, with tug of war, tennis, cycling, archery, horseracing, shooting and golf all getting their moment to shine. There was even a marathon from Navan to Croke Park. And participants weren’t limited to sporting events – contests also took place for piped bands, poetry, Irish dancing, storytelling, singing and art.

To ensure the games were well attended, Walsh had invited a host of athletes to stop off in Ireland on their way home from the Paris Olympics. The most famous of these was Harold Osborn, an American athlete who won two golds in Paris. His appearance at the Tailteann Games drew huge crowds and lots of press interest.

Motorbike racing was one of the great successes of the Games, drawing forty thousand spectators to the Phoenix Park. Many more gathered to witness a mock battle staged by the newly formed Free State Air Corps. One hundred thousand people watched as ground troops defended a wooden castle while in the air, pilots dropped fake bombs that exploded into plumes of smoke. The Irish Times described the Games as “an enormous success, full of brilliant performances which have given a tremendous impetus to Ireland and to Irish sport” and hailed J. J. Walsh as “an optimist among pessimists.”

It was expected that this would be the first of many, and that Aonach Tailteann would be held every four years. The 1928 games were similarly successful. Amsterdam hosted the 1928 Olympics so once again, athletes were invited to visit Ireland. Pat O’Callaghan, a medical student from Cork who became a national hero when he won Olympic gold for his hammer throw, was welcomed enthusiastically. To the crowd’s delight, he threw even further at the Tailteann Games than he had in Amsterdam.

The most famous visitor to the 1928 Games wasn’t a competitor, though a sportsman, nonetheless. World heavy weight boxing champion Gene Tunney, whose parents hailed from Mayo, received a great welcome when crowds turned out for his arrival at Dun Laoghaire. Tunney was only recently retired, having won his last fight just a month previously.

Waterpolo was a highlight of the 1928 Games, thanks to Ireland beating England. And once again, teams of Irish athletes came from all over the world – in fact, the number of competitors was almost as high as it had been in 1924. More female athletes took part in the Games than in the Olympics that year. All in all, the second Aonach Tailteann was a huge success.

Things had changed dramatically by the time the Games were due to be staged in 1932. Fianna Fáil won the election that year, ushering in a complete changing of the guard when they formed a new government. With memories of the Civil War still fresh, how likely was the new government to endorse an event that had been the brainchild of their political enemies?

The Games of 1932 were plagued by a series of unlucky events. Firstly, J. J. Walsh stepped down as director of the Tailteann Committee. Disillusioned with politics, Walsh had resigned from government in 1927. Now, he decided it was time to focus his efforts elsewhere. His experience was sorely missed.

The second problem was timing. The Eucharistic Congress, which took place just days before the Games kicked off, drew one million people to mass at the Phoenix Park. In contrast, the thirty thousand people who turned up to the opening of the Games seemed like a poor show. Finally, the 1932 Olympics took place in Los Angeles, depriving the Tailteann Committee of another chance to attract international stars. As a result, the 1932 Aonach Tailteann was nowhere near as successful as its predecessors. Sadly, Aonach Tailteann fizzled out after that poor performance, despite Walsh’s efforts to save it. At the time, the National Athletic and Cycling Association was involved in a bitter dispute about its representation of athletes in Northern Ireland. It refused to recognise the international body’s ruling that it had no jurisdiction there. As a result, Irish athletes were banned from competing, making the fate of the 1936 Games uncertain.

On top of that, a damaging trade war with Britain meant that government finances were in a poor state. Walsh continued to lobby for the games, however, so Taoiseach Eamon de Valera appointed a committee of civil servants to report on its feasibility.

In 1938, it recommended that the event be discontinued. The Tailteann Games came to a disappointing end, but almost a century has passed since then. Perhaps the time is right to revive this historic festival once more. When we are finally able to come together again, what could be better than an epic celebration of Irish sport and culture?"

A tribute to my father on the anniversary of his death.

Wrote this two years ago on Facebook.

My father died twenty-five years ago today. I have been thinking about him a lot this month. I've posted a lot about my father passing on his love of music to me and how he always took the the time to watch basketball games with me and how much I regret not watching baseball games with him. But there are many other things about my father....so today 25 years after his death, I will say my father was complex. Literally an Okie-meaning his family lost their Oklahoman farm during the dust bowl and moved to California, where Okies were not wanted- imagine them as refugees from another country today. He never graduated from high school, but was one of the best read men I knew. He was my secret "book buddy" who would discuss Robinson Crusoe, count of monte cristo, treasure island, Huck Finn with me. He taught me basic addition and subtraction pre kindergarten by playing black jack with me. Also taught me the game of billiards, but I could never get as good as he was. Life lesson he taught me from the game though- you don't have to make tricky shots if you get really good at "the leave" - lining up the cue ball for a good shot. Think about it, apply it to life...wish I had learned that lesson better. My dad was not overtly political, but having lived most of his adult life in California he registered to vote for the first time in order to vote against Reagan who was no friend to the unions in California. My dad was definitely Union proud. For a kind of uneducated, hard working, union guy he was amazingly new age like. He loved telling stories about his grandmother who had "healing" powers- not from God, although my father's faith believed strongly in the laying on of hands, but because she knew things about herbs and home remedies. When I was about six and sick, he sat and massaged my feet and as he did so informed me of all the reflexology of the foot - this location helps with your stomach, this with your sinuses. I am a sucker for foot rubs to this day. His view on racial relations were complex- rooted in a practicality I think more than anything else. When I was in high school 78 or 79 , he told me the day after a slumber party that he was proud of me for inviting a black girl. I thought it one of the strangest conversations we ever had. I had invited my friends- I never thought about race- that wasn't how I had been raised. My mother's people after all were Native American- half of them- and my father admired Dr. King. My mother voted for Robert Kennedy in the California primaries. They were new deal Democrats. I didn't realize how deep racism ran in this Oklahoman man until a few years later when my father met a boyfriend of mine who was black. It was so bizarre to me that he had the reaction he had. If my father was alive today, truthfully, he just wouldn't have voted in the election. He wouldn't have had concerns about a woman being President, but I'm not sure he would have like Hillary. Bernie probably would have appealed to him. Truthfully there would have been parts of Trump that would have appealed to him and parts he would have hated. My guess is that is true about a lot of a Trump supporters. So I don't know, but since he matches the demographics of the Trump supporter, I have been thinking about him a lot to try and figure out the uneducated white voter - Trump's base, because I can't write off that demographic, y'all, no matter what I think politically when you talk about that demographic, I am them and they are me. I haven't figured it out, though. I will, however, say this...I know my father fought against Hitler and fascism in WW II. Many of us white working class children of uneducated parents have that as our family history. I hope we all remember that part of our heritage with pride and with dedication to their memories as we go forward.

Irish-American Heritage Month

This March, in recognition of Irish-American Heritage Month (which has been celebrated since 1991), we are sharing with you the naturalization documents and brief biography of Jeremiah (Jerry) Connolly.  He is but one of the millions of Irish immigrants who came to the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries.  

Jerry was born in Glengarriff in County Cork, Ireland, on July 22nd in either 1886 or 1896, depending on the source.  He sailed on the SS Cedric and arrived on the shores of the United States on May 12, 1907.  According to the 1910 census, Jerry was living with his brother in Jerome, Arizona, where he filed a declaration of intention to become a U.S. citizen.  

He then moved to Los Angeles where he married his wife, May O. Gorman, in 1925.  Jerry and May had three children, Marie, John, and Peggy Ann.  They settled in Tujunga, California, where they owned and operated a billiards hall next door to their home on Foothill Boulevard.  Jerry filed a second declaration of intention in 1942 and finally became a U.S. citizen on December 22, 1944.

Fun facts: About 10% of U.S. residents claim Irish ancestry and it is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Irish immigrants arrived in America between 1820 and 1930.

Rediscovering Minalabac

For someone who has been to Minalabac several times for immersion, outreach or fieldwork, what would make one to come back to Minalabac? 

Minalabac is a 45-minute drive from Naga CIty. If you are going for public transportation, you can ride a jeep that head directly to Minalabac from Jeep Terminal located near LCC Mall. 

WHITE PEBBLE BEACH RESORT Located: Bagolatao, Minalabac

Minalabac is among the coastal municipalities of Camarines Sur that has stood out for its unique landscape due to its abundance of white pebbles in its coastline and clear waters. Moreover, claiming the title “Home of White Pebble Beaches”. Among the known resort open to public is the White Pebble Beach Resort. 

It has cottages where you can rest, eat and enjoy the wonderful scenery at the beach. 

It also has rest house too. It has a KTV and Billiards for amusement at the beach. There are also available rooms for overnight stay. 

Near the shore, there is rock bar which is just a few minute boat ride where you can enjoy the view of the White Pebble Beach Resort from afar. 

UNNAMED CAVE Located: Bagolatao, Minalabac

While we were at the White Pebble Beach Resort, there were kids who approached us while we were at the shores of Bagolatao and asked us if we want to see the cave. We saw that some tourist also hopped on a motorized boat to see it. So off course, we were up for it as well. They became our tour guides. 

Ker (not sure if I spelled his name right), the boy in blue shirt says that since he doesn't have school and he is already done with his homework, he and his friends go to the cave. We asked them what is the name of the cave, he told us that the cave doesn't have a name. They just call it "kweba". 

Tourists who wants to go for a side trip can visit the cave. The cave is probably known to the locals but it is still unexplored and unknown to excursionist. If it weren't for them, this cave will remain unnoticed. 

BICOL SHELL MUSEUM Located: Bagolatao, Minalabac

The Bicol Shell Museum is owned and curated by Marine Biologist, Professor Leovegildo Basmayor Sr. who is very dedicated and passionate with his collections on seashells. Wanting to share his knowledge and his collection, the shell museum which houses 4,000 shells are labeled with scientific names, dates and places where they were found. Currently, it is closed due to renovations being made and the shells were not at the museum.The Bicol Shell Museum is probably its own kind in the Philippines. 

MONUMENT OF GEN. LUDOVICO AREJOLA Located: Municipal Hall of Minalabac

Apart from it being recognized for its white pebble beaches, this municipality is also rich in history and cultural heritage. Minalabac also became the historic battle ground defended by Gen. Ludovico Arejola as he led the Bicolano revolutionaries against American troops during the Filipino-American War in Ambos Camarines. His heroism ad inspired the people and now, a newly built monument was inaugurated last June 12, 2018 in his honor so that the people especially that younger generation will not forget about his story of bravery and heroism.
